Sweet Rebellion: The Diet That Lets You Eat Chocolate

For anyone with a sweet tooth, it’s hard to miss the cover of Dr. Melissa Hershberg’s book The Rebel Diet, with its tantalizing close-up of a bar of chocolate.

Cruel joke? Major test of our willpower? Nope. The ‘rebel’ part of Hershberg’s means we can indulge in our favourite things – chocolate, red wine, coffee, etc. – as long as we don’t go overboard.

"Most diets fail because they're overly restrictive. They set people up for failure,” Hershberg tells CityLine.ca. “People think they can't eat the foods they love, they think they have to be hungry, and it becomes so daunting that they say, 'To heck with it,' and they go off the plan before they've given it a good shot."

So all those rules about cutting out fats, sugars, and carbs? Break them, Hershberg states.

The Rebel Diet

So, what dumb diet are you on right now?

Have you been experimenting with buckwheat due to rigid and uber expensive plan set out by Naturopath? Refusing carbs…only to realize that you actually don’t have a clue what they are all about? (SPAGHETTI SQUASH PEOPLE!!) Has anyone actually tried the acai thing? What about that gizmo that looks like a retainer that you pop in your mouth to prevent normal chewing? Stop bite? It sounds most unpleasant.

Eat, cheat and still look sweet

'F&*% dieting," writes Dr. Melissa Hershberg provocatively on the first page of her new book, The Rebel Diet.

It's the first time, but not the last time, the Winnipeg-born physician and nutrition expert drops the F-bomb, which shares space in her health tome with other naughty words that reference body parts, bodily functions and sexuality.

Hershberg's core message: Healthy eating shouldn't mean adhering to a stringent set of rules.

TEAM YOU
...Experts like Dr. Melissa Hershberg, a medical doctor with The Toronto Clinic, suggest that a good posse includes an MD and a naturopathic doctor (ND). (The Toronto Clinic is a health-care facility where business executives are sent by their companies to receive preventive whole-body care after they’re assessed by a team—integrative treatment that’s usually not covered by provincial health care.) Such experts recommend, too, that a nutritionist and a trainer, both of whom specialize in the kind of noninvasive prevention that is typically given light treatment in Western medical schools, be included as well. Then, of course, there are optional add-ons, such as a chiropractor, maybe an allergist (for ragweed season) and a massage therapist.

If you’re like most people, chances are you may have put on a few un-welcomed pounds over the winter months. Or perhaps you’ve recently been to the doctor and discovered that your blood pressure is too high, or your triglycerides and cholesterol are out of range, or maybe it’s your blood sugar that’s escalating. For the roughly 25% of Canadians with The Metabolic Syndrome, a condition in which all of these above afflictions cluster together (diagnostic criteria to follow article), the implications are vast; having The Metabolic Syndrome increases one’s risk for diabetes, heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, and even some cancers.

Why are so many Canadians plagued with these metabolic disorders and further, why do these disorders tend to cluster together? The answer lies predominantly with our diet and the effect it has on our hormones – mainly insulin.
